As a child I watched with breathless excitement, fear, and wonderment on that summer day on July 20, 1969 as the Apollo 11 moon mission neared it’s goal of landing on the moon. Tense moments passed as the lunar landed separated from the command module and made it’s way to the moon’s surface. We waited in suspense as the astronauts emerged and stepped onto the lunar surface, the first humans to set foot on soil that was not of this Earth.
Then came those famous words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for Mankind.” Neil Armstrong became every American’s hero, every child’s role model. Space exploration became a reality, not just a dream. We could reach beyond our planet.
And today, Neil Armstrong took his final step, dying at the age of 82.
Goodbye, Neil, you inspired a generation to keep reaching for the stars.
